Professor Jennifer Bard has been invited to Bioethics 2004, an invitation only national retreat for scholars in bioethics, to be held this year in Wintergreen, Virginia from June 16-20. Bioethics 2004 is sponsored by the National Center for Ethics in Health Care, Veteran's Health Administration and the Center for Applied Ethics & Professional Practice Education Development Center in Newton, Mass.

Professor Jennifer Bard will be presenting at the National Health Law Teacher's Conference on June 5th. The 2004 Conference is sponsored by Seton Hall University Law School in New Jersey.

Each year the publisher of Who's Who: American Law Students, invites the 182 ABA-accredited Law Schools to nominate a student to compete for the title of Outstanding Law Student of the Year in America. This year, for the first time, the Texas Tech University School of Law had a student win this prestigious national award. Mr. Mark DesNoyer, a third year student who is a Marine Corps veteran and is married with two children, was the person selected.

The selection criteria are: Service to the Law School Community; Service to the Larger Community; Outstanding Contribution to the Study of Law; Pursuit of a Law Career in spite of Prohibiting Factors; and, Factors Distinguishing this Student from others that are Worthy of Recognition.

Professor Larry Cunningham will be presenting at the American Association of Law Schools Conference on Clinical Legal Education in San Diego, CA, from May 1-5, 2004. He will be speaking on the use of pre-semester orientation periods in clinics and externships.

Professor Nancy Soonpaa will be a presenter at the Institute for Law School Teaching's Annual Conference in Spokane, Washington, in July. She will speak on "Applying Learning Theory: Helping Students to Learn How to Learn".

Professor Nancy Soonpaa will be a presenter at the Legal Writing Institute's Biennial Conference in Seattle, WA, in July. She will speak on "Five Ways to Sabotage Your Teaching Career Without Realizing What You've Done".

Professor Bryan T. Camp has been invited to speak at the ABA Tax Section's national meeting in Washington D.C. in May 2004. As a nationally recognized expert on summons law and privilege law, Professor Camp will present his views on liability issues arising from IRS summonses and summons enforcement litigation relating to tax shelter inquiries. As part of its recent attempts to shut down abusive tax shelters, the IRS has become more aggressive in using it summons powers to force law firms and accounting firms who have promoted what the IRS considers to be abusive tax shelters to disclose both the substance of their advice to clients and the identity of their clients. Law firms in particular claim the protection of the attorney client privilege. Accountants claim the protection of I.R.C. section 7525. Professor Camp has been invited to participate in a panel discussion with representatives of several national law firms and accounting firms who are currently in litigation with the IRS over this issue.

On April 30th, Associate Dean and Mahon Professor Susan Saab Fortney will speak at the ABA National Conference on Legal Malpractice. Dean Fortney's topic is "Emerging Issues for Limited Liability Law Firms." The ABA Standing Committee on Professional Liability sponsors the annual conference.

Professor John Krahmer will be speaking at the Second Annual DePaul Business & Commercial Law Symposium held in conjunction with the 74th Annual Meeting of the Commercial Law League of America to be held in Chicago on April 15-18. The Commercial Law League is an association of attorneys whose practice involves commercial, consumer, and bankruptcy law. The Commercial Law League, in cooperation with the DePaul University College of Law, publishes the DePaul Business & Commercial Law Journal, successor to the Commercial Law Journal previously published by the Commercial Law League.

Professor Jennifer Bard will lead a discussion of the antitrust law implications of the "Match," the process through which medical students get residency positions. Copies of the article under discussion, from the New England Journal of Medicine, are available on the third floor of the Faculty Offices. All students and faculty are welcome to attend on Thursday, April 15, in room2B152 at the Health Sciences Center. Refreshments will be served at 5:00pm.

Professor Rachel Van Cleave will speak on Victim's Rights in the Criminal Justice System at the April 16, 2004, Academic Conference at the Suffolk University Law School in Boston. The conference, "Beyond Prosecution: Sexual Assault Victim's Rights in Theory and Practice", will bring together scholars and practitioners in an attempt to further understand the role of sexual assault victims in the modern legal landscape.
