Associate Dean Brian Shannon to speak at the Associate Deans Conference, "Managing the Law School, Managing the Job" to be held June 3-6, 2004 in Englewood, Colorado. Dean Shannon will speak on the topic of ADA/Mental Health.

Maddox Professor of Law Bruce Kramer will speak at "Land Use Law: Where We Are and Where We're Headed" at the Albany Law School in Albany, New York, May 20-21, 2004. Professor Kramer's topic will be "National Perspective-the Supreme Court and National Trends". The program is sponsored by The Center for American and International Law and its Institute for Local and Government Studies in cooperation with the Government Law Center of Albany Law School.

Professor Gabriel Eckstein will attend the latest Meeting of Experts of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) program on international and transboundary ground water resources June 21-22 in Paris. Eckstein, an expert in international water law, has been a regular participant at these meeting, including prior meetings in Paris and Tokyo. He is one of two legal experts and is the only American invited to the meeting. The conference is part of UNESCO's Internationally Shared Aquifer Resources Management Program and will focus on further developing concepts and principles applicable to transboundary ground water resources that could form the basis of a new United Nations treaty.

The Angelo State University Alumni Association has selected Associate Dean Brian Shannon as the recipient of their 2004 Distinguished Alumnus Award. The criteria for this award include distinguished professional and civic lifework. A representative from the ASU Alumni Association said, "Brian Shannon certainly embodies the extraordinary leadership and lifetime achievements the Association takes pride in recognizing and honoring." The award presentation will be a part of ASU's homecoming activities October 23-24, 2004. Shannon received a B.S. degree from Angelo State University in 1979.

The Texas Tech University College of Education recognized Dean Walter B. Huffman as their Distinguished Alumnus for 2004 at the Annual Awards Dinner May 4, 2004. This recognition is conferred on individuals who have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the advancement of the education profession. Dr. Sheryl L. Santos, Dean of the College of Education says that Huffman's "many achievements have promoted quality education and have brought recognition and honor to the profession and to Texas Tech University".

Associate Dean Susan Fortney will be speaking at the American Bar Association Conference on Professional Responsibility...the single largest gathering of legal ethics practitioners in the country. Her topic will be THE HOURS, a discussion of the effects of billable hour requirements. According to the ABA conference website, http://www.abanet.org/cpr/prconf.html, the "American Bar Association National Conference on Professional Responsibility is the preeminent educational and networking opportunity in the field of ethics and professional responsibility. . . Conference faculty includes recognized experts on professional responsibility who provide written materials, present plenary discussions and direct panel workshops open to audience participation".
