July 2004 News

Texas Tech law professor and Associate Dean Brian Shannon was awarded the Justice Frank Evans Award at the State Bar of Texas annual meeting and convention Friday, June 25. The award was bestowed by the State Bar of Texas Alternative Dispute Resolution Section at a luncheon during the convention. The award states the following:

Through his insightful and well-reasoned articles, Brian Shannon, almost single-handedly, has saved Texas from the Uniform Mediation Act. That alone would merit this most prestigious award. But Brian has done so much more for ADR, for the legal profession, and for the citizens of our state. As co-author of Rau, Sherman & Shannon's Texas ADR and Arbitration: Statutes and Commentary, and as author of numerous other articles on ADR, he has contributed invaluably to the development of ADR in Texas and beyond. His teaching, training, and publications cover diverse subjects and aid the practicing bench and bar both in the knowledge of substantive law and its practical, ethical, and service applications. Brian's volunteer work for legislative task forces, public agency advisory boards, family support groups, and human services providers is tireless. And his efforts to educate the bar, government leaders, families and the public regarding the law and fundamental rights of persons with disabilities and mental illness mark him as a true humanitarian and scholar.

Richard B. Roper III, Tech Law class of '82, has been appointed Interim United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, according to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal of June 30, 2004. For more information about this story, visit the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal's Web site at Lubbock Online.
