Professor Vaughn James has been interviewed by the 3ABN and Lifetalk radio networks for a radio program to be aired in October. The interview focused on Prof. James's latest law review article, Reaping Where They have Not Sowed: Have American Churches Failed to Satisfy the Requirements for the Religious Tax Exemption?, published in Volume 43 of The Catholic Lawyer (43 CATH. LAW. 29), a publication of St. John's University Law Review. The article - and the radio interview - discusses Prof. James's concern that American churches and religious organizations are violating Internal Revenue Code Sec. 501(c)(3) by engaging in political lobbying and being too deeply involved in political campaigns.
Professor Ann Graham will speak at the Texas Association of Bank Counsel's 28th Annual Convention on October 7, 2004, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Graham's topic is "The USA PATRIOT Act". The Texas Association of Bank Counsel is a network of approximately 800 Texas lawyers who represent financial institutions and regulatory agencies. Professor Graham was elected to serve on the Association's Board of Directors from 2002-2005.
Robert H. Bean Professor Marilyn Phelan has been invited to speak at the 20th General Conference & the 21st General Assembly of the International Council of Museums in Seoul, Korea on October 4, 2004. Professor Phelan's topic is "Legal and Ethical Considerations in the Repatriation of Stolen and Illegally Exported Cultural Property: Is There a Means to Settle the Disputes?"
Professor Larry Cunningham was quoted by the Associated Press regarding a prosecution of an Amarillo mother for delivery of a controlled substance to her unborn child. Cunningham addressed the legal strategy of the defense in pleading guilty and seeking an appellate ruling on the constitutionality of the prosecution. Cunningham also appeared on the Brad Messer Show, a news radio talkshow in San Antonio, discussing the case and its implications.
